Frequently asked questions
Learn what to expect as you begin therapy and move through the process at your own pace.
Ask Us Something ElseGetting started is as simple as making a phone call. After you call us and provide us with some information, we will match you with a therapist best suited for your needs. While you wait to be matched, you will be emailed some documents to complete before your first appointment with us. Once you submit those, we will verify your insurance (if applicable) which typically takes about 48 hours. Then you will be all set to schedule your first appointment with your therapist!
At Wellness Therapy Center, we believe therapy is for everyone. Everybody can benefit from having an empathetic listener and guide. Whether you are dealing with mental health issues, relationship struggles, personal conflicts, career struggles, substance use, or just looking to better understand yourself, we are here to help. The decision to begin therapy is deeply personal and we understand that the idea may take some warming up to. We are here to support you every step of the way.
Therapy is at your own pace. We often recommend clients begin with weekly sessions for at least the first 3 to 4 sessions to become familiar with the nature of therapy and help the client and therapist get to know each other. You may feel you need more support and talk with your therapist about coming multiple times a week. Likewise, you may find weekly is too frequent and opt for biweekly appointments or monthly. While your therapist may make suggestions regarding frequency based on your goals and treatment plan, we understand that therapy can be a big time commitment and encourage you to choose what is best for you.
The most important part of therapy is making sure you connect with your therapist. Your therapist should make you feel respected, heard, and comfortable. Every therapist has their own personality and approach. If you find your therapist’s approaches or responses are not matching your needs, you can always reach out to be matched with a new therapist. As professionals in the field, our counselors understand the value of the relationship between therapist and client, and will never judge you for your decision to try out a different therapist.
Goals are a way for you and your therapist to orient sessions. Goals can be very specific or they can be general, and they are always set by the client. Goals are not rigid. They can be changed or revised at any time in the therapeutic journey. Additionally, setting a goal does not mean you are unable to talk about other concerns during sessions. Therapy is always a safe space for you to process anything on your mind.
We believe the ultimate goal of therapy is to equip you with the tools you need to navigate the world in healthy ways. Meeting your therapeutic goals may mean it is time to consider winding down frequency of sessions to reach an endpoint in treatment. However, sometimes working towards goals opens new paths to go down that you still may want to process with your therapist. Reaching your current goals can mean setting new goals.
Therapy is no quick fix, it is a deeply complex and emotional journey that our counselors lead you through. The time it takes to see a difference in yourself will differ greatly from client to client depending on various factors. It is also important to note that sometimes unpacking or processing things you have not addressed in the past can cause intense emotions that may feel like a temporary “low”. This does not mean therapy is not working, it means you are doing the hard work of healing. We encourage clients to always be open with their therapist about how therapy is affecting them.
There are some types of therapies, such as Solution Focused Therapy, which are shorter in duration. However, these therapies are not a match for every client. Talk with your therapist about whether these might be right for you if you are struggling with committing to longer term therapies.
A therapist is unable to prescribe medications, unless they are a medical doctor such as a Psychiatrist. At our practice, we do not have any clinician with prescribing power. If your therapist believes that medication might be beneficial, they can refer you to a psychiatrist or other medical professional who can determine if a prescription would be right for you.
Getting started takes one phone call. We listen, answer your questions, and match you with the right therapist.
